Faux Spattering Painting Techniques – Simple Step by Step Instructions
At one time or another we have been involved in spattering painting techniques quite unintentionally of course. Remember the time you painted the living room and spattered paint on the floor that needed to be mopped up? Spattering painting techniques have evolved from accidental spatters to deliberate for spatters for the purpose of creating art.

Spatter painting involves building up drops of paint to acquire a textured surface. Depending on how good you are the finished result can be quite decorative. There are different spattering painting techniques that you can use to create something that is a joy to behold.

The faux spattering painting techniques involve making a surface resemble marble. Spattering is actually one of the easiest forms of faux painting, and anyone can do it. Look at it this way, it’s easy to do, inexpensive, and if you don’t like the result, a new coat of paint will wipe out the damage.

Let us take a quick look at how it’s done.

You need to have 4 or more colors of paint to work with, choosing one color for the base coat to be applied on the wall. The other 3 or more colors will be used as part of your spattering painting techniques. Don’t go wild when choosing the colors to end up with something out of a nightmare. The colors you choose need to compliment and blend in with the furniture, draperies and carpet.

Use painter’s tape to cover the areas that will not be painted and cover all the exposed surfaces with plastic. Painter’s tape can be removed easily, which makes the clean up afterward that much easier.

Start painting your wall with the base coat and let it dry. Paint a second coat over the first and touch up thin areas. The second coat of paint should dry to the level where it isn’t sticky when touched. Fill a painting tray with the first to your paint spattering colors; you can always use a disposable container if you don’t want the added expense of so many paint trays. Dip you paintbrush in the paint and knock off the excess paint by sliding it along the interior of the tray or container.

Holding a stick in your hand and standing close to the wall surface that needs to be spatter painted, tap your paintbrush on the stick. Gentle tapping of the paintbrush is recommended to avoid making a mess of your wall. You can move forward meaning closer to the wall for bigger spatters and move backward when you want smaller spatters. Moving in a uniform direction you can cover the entire wall using the faux spattering painting techniques described.

Now repeat the process with the second color of paint. Wash out the brush first or use a new one. Again you can use another paint tray or container to pour the paint into. Then repeat the whole process with the third color and so on. You don’t need to wait for each color to dry before moving on to the application of the next color.
