Minimalist Interior design involves decorating the house with items or furnishings that serve a specific purpose and not precisely for decorative purposes. Minimalists always believe that whatever items they use should serve a particular purpose and come up with wonderful interior decorations no matter their limitations.

Most people when they hear the word minimalist the first thing that comes to mind is simple and bare. As we mentioned earlier minimalists only work with what is necessary and do away with any other items that would work to add beauty to a home. They tend to believe these extra non functional items simply make a room look messy.

This type of interior design began after the Second World War in America, and was the brain child of a designer known as Frank Stella. Its main purpose was to help reveal the work of the artist for what it was and not through various interpretations of different people.

When this type of art became more popular it was also incorporated to sculptures and lastly to interior design. This type of design has always been seen as the fewer items used the better although it may not have been exactly like that from its inception.

The most important aspect of a minimalist design is the “fewer the items used the better”, and this is what separates this design from most others. One of the most preferred colors used by a minimalist, especially for the walls is white, in case they need to work with any other shades of color they do so only if there is a need to accentuate.

And even with such colors they usually work with a selected few which include earth colors or a simple bright, red or blue.

When it comes to selecting the type of wall, ceiling and furniture, they always prefer to have both plain and smooth contrary to textured or with fancy additions such as marbles for the walls or decorated ceilings. You may come across one or two artworks, but they will not be allocated special spots in unoccupied areas.

The goal of a minimalist is to always achieve an end result that portrays an image of minimalism and openness to his final work. This design is quite effective, especially for tiny rooms unlike any other design that would include too many items, which lead to a completely stuffed up room with very limited space.

Minimalists also strive to ensure the rooms are free and aerated. They believe some types of furniture can hinder the free flow or air. Therefore, they make use of low furniture in order to do away with any obstacles that might interrupt the openness and flow of the fresh air.
