Killing stumps
Occasionally, with trees like willows and members of the plum and cherry families, cutting the trunk down to a stump is not enough. Suckering shoots will surface for some time from roots remaining in the ground, eventually replacing their problem parent.
In these cases, it is advisable to kill the stump chemically to prevent regeneration. If you find yourself in this situation, seek advice from your garden supplier on the most suitable product, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Remember chemical stump killers work best on freshly cut stumps. Don’t wait and act a month later.
