How to Clean Laminate Floors – Vinyl, Laminate and Hardwood Floor Care

If you’ve ever wondered how to wax your floors without ruining them, you’re not alone. The reason is simple – there are just too many steps involved, and too many products on the market that can damage your floors.

Tips, instructions, warnings, advisories, caution and precaution – sometimes it can be too much. If there were only a simpler way of knowing what comes after what, and what goes with what type of floor, things would be much easier. And now there is. Whether you have a vinyl floor, a laminate floor or a hardwood floor, there are some easy tips that work for all types of flooring.

Stripping is probably the hardest part of the job physically, since it involves a lot of scrubbings, scraping and squatting. However, it is common to all floor types that have been waxed at one time or another. Knowing this is the key to simplifying the job – if your floor hasn’t been waxed before, then you can skip the stripping and get straight to the cleaning and waxing.

To strip old wax, just remember three simple steps – wet and wash; strip and scrub; drop and dry Clean with a mop using a mild soap solution, strip with a commercial vinyl stripper and stripping machine to scrub it off – you can use some stripper on a toothbrush for hard-to-access places such as corners, and dry it with a clean towel on your haunches or on your knees. Your stripping job is done.

Next part is how to wax your floor. Apply some wax to a very clean or new mop. Start at the corner opposite the door and work your way backwards doing a small circular section at a time, taking care to cover every inch. Wait for about an hour to be on the safe side, and repeat at least twice. Again, simple steps to remember – wax from the corner; work in circles; wait and copy.

Of course, for any comprehensive review on how to wax your floor, certain notes are a must, even though they need not sound like you’re being read the Miranda Rights. Simple notes simply lead to less confusion.

Tip 1 – Buy or rent a stripping, buffing and waxing machine. It will save you time and money in the long run.

Tip 2 – Buy stripping solutions, waxes and cleaning solutions from the same manufacturer where possible. Their products will likely be compatible with each other, and they’ll be happy to recommend the right combination.

Tip 3 – Wear slippers or socks on waxed floors – oils from your feet, or hard-heeled shoes tend to murder your beautiful wax job.

Tip 4 – Clean any spills and stains quickly and with mild cleaners, preferably green cleaning products.

Tip 5 – Enjoy the experience – no point in going through the job with a sour puss if you have to do it anyway. Besides, a well-waxed floor is something you can truly be proud of.
