A word of warning on clearing trees. It is always better to get the stump out so you do not encourage honey mushroom, and so that replanting is not physically restricted by a large area of wood and roots. To remove the stump easily, even of trees only 4 to 6 inches in diameter, it is far better to cut off the trunk no lower than waist high so you have something to lean on when you have to cut through the main roots. A stump in the ground with no trunk at all is very difficult to remove.
Larger trunks with a diameter of up to 12 to 20 inches may also be cut down to this height. You can rent a winch to pull them out after the roots have been cut. Winches are dangerous tools to use because of the tensions involved, and it is necessary to have something to pull against a very well-protected mature tree, for example. But they definitely make light work of removing stumps that are too big to dig out but are not so large that you wish to have the stump mechanically ground down. Most people prefer to have stumps winched out professionally.
Remove large branches while the sap is down. When removing seedling trees and shrubs, watch out that you do not hack through major roots of nearby permanent plants.
