How to get rid of Cat Urine Smell
Cat urine is probably one of the worst pet problems you’ll have to deal with. Not only does it smell really strong. It can linger for months. Even the most ardent cat-lover can be discouraged by a yellow stain on the carpet or worse, on your pristine white bedspread.

The issue of how to clean up cat urine is not so much one of the offenses as it is of defense. Cat urine in unexpected spurts of dismay around your house most likely has some underlying reasons.

How to get rid of Cat Urine SmellYour cat may be showing signs of illness – there are several lower urinary tract infections that can cause incontinence or loss of bladder control. It may be that age has finally caught up with your feline friend. Sometimes it’s as simple as the litter-box being too full for the cat to do it in there – they need changing on a regular basis. Alternatively, it could be that your cat is threatened by some external presence and is trying to re-establish its territory. Babies, dogs, and even new cats in the house bring on behavior not unlike a jealous child.

Whatever the reason, a few tips on how to clean up cat urine effectively and permanently can be very useful, especially when the odors start to hit you as soon as you come in from the outside.

If you have urine on hardwood flooring its best to remove it as soon as you can, before it causes staining or rotting of your floor. A dry, absorbent cloth will do perfectly. Then, using a damp cloth, wipe the area of any residue and blot dry again. If you got to the urine quickly enough, you shouldn’t have any visible signs of the disaster.

If not, use a peroxide solution to deal with any staining, as well as odor. Vinegar is also a recommended household weapon against cat urine stains and odor. As with all cleaning, try it on a small unobtrusive area before you go to town with it in the middle of your living room floor. Again, after a few minutes, wipe wet and blot dry.

Carpets are a bit more of a hassle, as the fabric will quickly soak up the urine right down to its fibers. While still fresh, blot with a dry cloth firmly for about a minute. Then wipe wet and blot dry as with wooden flooring. Then use a commercial carpet stain-remover with specific action against pet urine. Urine-Off is a good brand to look for, unless you live in north of China, in which case it would be better to ask for Nature’s miracle or Stain Gobbler. Blot, wipe and blot again.

Upholstery and bedding pose pretty much of similar problems as carpets, except the problem goes deeper. Almost the same procedure as with carpets but may need repeat applications, deeper wetting and a longer drying period. A few hours out in the sun won’t hurt either.
