How to Secure a Hanging Basket

A hanging basket, fully planted and well watered, can be very heavy, so it’s important that the bracket is strong enough to take the weight and is securely fastened to the wall. Depending on your choice of plants, baskets can be hung in most locations, but they’re never very successful in windy spots. Most will withstand the occasional buffeting, but not constant wear and tear. Sheltered positions really are the best.

Window boxes, too, can be extremely heavy and must be attached securely in place. On sills that slope forwards, put small wedges under the front of the box to keep it level and attach metal brackets to the sides of the window recess or to the sill itself to prevent the box from slipping forwards. It’s well worth placing a plastic tray under the window box to stop excess water from running down the side of the building. And if you’re a high-rise gardener, water won’t get dripped on your neighbors.
