Il primo aperse la porta con una chiave piatta ed entrò, seguito
da un giovane che si levò il berretto con fare impacciato.
Il giovane indossava rozzi panni che odoravano forte di mare ed era palesemente
fuori posto nell'atrio spazioso in cui si trovava. Non sapeva che fare del berretto
e se lo stava cacciando nella tasca della giubba, quando l'altro glielo levò
di mano. Il gesto fu calmo e naturale e il giovanotto impacciato lo apprezzò.
"Capisce", pensò "mi porterà sino in fondo proprio come si deve".

The one opened the door with a latch-key and went in, followed
by a young fellow who awkwardly removed his cap. He wore rough clothes that
smacked of the sea, and he was manifestly out of place in the spacious hall
in which he found himself. He did not know what to do with his cap, and was
stuffing it into his coat pocket when the other took it from him. The act was
done quietly and naturally, and the awkward young fellow appreciated it. "He
understands," was is thought. "He'll see me through all right."
