Eravamo in navigazione nei mari del sud, dal Perù (dove eravamo rimasti per un intero anno) verso la Cina e il Giappone; portando provviste per dodici mesi. Avevamo avuto vento buono da est, a dire il vero non molto e un po' debole, per più di cinque mesi. Ma il vento cambiò direzione per molto tempo, facendoci fare ben poca strada, tanto che in alcuni momenti fummo in procinto di tornare indietro.
